Done it All

We are in our 6th year of homeschooling. SIX YEARS!

circa 2006

That first year I had 3rd and 5th grades. Also 9th and 10th grades. Sure….first year I had high school. Why not?

I have run the gamut of styles. As many families there are that homeschool there will be that many different ways to homeschool. No two families are the same.

We started with K-12 online public school. I seriously didn’t think I could do it alone.

After K-12 I went with Idaho Virtual Academy. I actually went through them for two school years. Lots of perks such as karate and bowling paid for.  Soon, though, there were restrictions.

The more sure of myself I became, the less I liked the restrictions.

I researched homeschooling and found Charlotte Mason. Fell in love with her ideas. Her ideals.

“Education is an atmosphere, a discipline, a life.”
Charlotte Mason

Narration. Living math. Real books. Not textbooks or workbooks.

More recently we have become child-led. I hate to call it unschooling, because I feel it has a stigma. I don’t let my kids sit around all day and play video games. (Unless it’s the dead of winter and we haven’t left the house for days on end….then Wii is okay.)

If my thirteen-year-old wants to learn about video editing then we research all we can on the topic. I let him spend a few hours editing his own videos. Stop Motion, anybody? Hours!

This works for us. Our kids retain more when they are learning things they are interested in.

My favorite class in high school was Geology. I remember more from that class than my history class. Why? Because I enjoyed it.

“Character doesn’t just come from exposing children to great ideas. It’s also the result of habits that we strive to instill based on those ideas. We recognize both principles–idea and habit.”
Charlotte Mason

For our family homeschooling is about the whole child.

Their character.

Their relationship with God.

So, when you are first starting out with homeschooling, don’t compare yourself to the other homeschoolers.

Don’t be afraid to change things up to make them work for you.

That’s the joy of homeschooling….YOU make it work for YOUR family.
