Happy New Year From The Homeschool Post!

by Shannon Entin on January 1, 2012

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called “Opportunity” and its first chapter is New Year’s Day. ~ Edith L. Pierce

2012 is here! The New Year is typically a time when we all start fresh. I’ve noticed a trend lately of eschewing “resolutions”, and I think that’s fine in the sense that we shouldn’t set unrealistic goals then beat ourselves up when we don’t achieve them. But setting intentions, having a plan, plotting the steps needed to get where you want to be (and knowing where you want to be!) are important steps to take on a continual basis. The concept of a “new year” is a good excuse to think about our intentions, but we also should remember to keep them in our mind’s eye all the time.

If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people. ~ Confucius

A few of the Post’s writers have come together to share their goals and words for the new year. Won’t you share yours in the comments?

C is for Celebration

Regina from The Single Homeschool Mom will be working on perseverance with her Trifecta for Success. She writes: “You know that space between your refrigerator and the wall?  The space you usually don’t clean because it’s too hard to get to so you just forget about it?  You clean it when it becomes absolutely necessary. I didn’t want my life to be that neglected space.”

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Bon from Math is Not a Four Letter Word doesn’t do one-word goals or resolutions. She writes a manifesto. How cool is that? Bon wants to “increase the effectiveness of parents who are trying to positively influence their children in math.

Donetta from OK Homeschool Mom says she’s “not much of a ‘New Year’s resolutions’ kind of girl but I thought it might be a good idea to make a few goals and also have a little fun voicing a few dreams for the year!”

The bad news is time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot. ~ Michael Altshuler

Shannon from the Discipline Project (that’s me!) writes about momentum for 2012: “An object in motion tends to stay in motion. This year, that object will be me.”

We’ll end this post with words from Rachel at Finding Joy, who wants to live 2012 with a resolute heart. Rachel recognizes

“the need for courage
and purpose
and boldness
and being strong
and steadfast
and being tenacious
and persevering
and being true.”

We wish you health, happiness, strength and inspiration in 2012.

What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the New Year. ~ Vern McLellan

To play whatever my children want to play with me when they ask and not worry about the writing or housework that needs to get done.
