Making Waves with Summer Reading

by Mishelle Lane on July 29, 2010

The summer has been long.  It’s been filled with time at the pool, playing with friends, movies, picnics, sleepovers, and more.

There’s one thing that it’s also been filled with, and that’s reading!

Our library has a wonderful Summer Reading Program.  Not only do the kids have a chance to win prizes, they can also opt out of the little prizes and trade it in for one movie pass.

A little motivation goes a long way, don’t you agree?

Mikey’s chart is almost filled, and he can’t wait to go to the movies with a couple of his friends who are participating in the same effort.   They are all working toward a common goal, reminding each other along the way, encouraging each other to read, read, read!

Does your local library have a Summer Reading Program?

We do and we all love it. There is one for the kids and the adults. They give out prizes and at the end of the Summer Reading Club they have a huge party with a bunch of drawing to win things.

We always do the summer reading program each summer. Sometimes we even join 2 or 3 from surrounding libraries. We just had the end of the summer pirate party to wind our down for the year.

We love our summer reading program. In years past, we have participated in Lunch n Learn at the park – This year, in our new town, we have the Library Program – it is amazing how turning in their hours makes them happy! This is the first year that they have wanted to participate, instead of me just tacking summer hours. :) Every year I wonder how to re-create this enthusiasm during the winter – but so far – we are unable to come up with something. They really like making the librarian happy! We are almost done with our books (where we track hours). My 9 yr old son is in the 3-6th grade program and my 12 yr old son is in the Teen Program (7th-12th).
