Two weeks ago I had the privilege of co-hosting the Savvy Blogging Summit in Breckenridge, Colorado. The focus of this event was to learn how to be a better, more productive, and successful blogger.
I learned so much at this event that it would be impossible to put it all in one blog post. And even if I could, little of it would relate specifically to homeschooling. The CSS/Code and Design class taught by Joy Miller was one session that had elements I could apply to my blog and my homeschool.
Joy taught us about a design principle called SCRAP. While she tailored it towards the design of our websites and graphics, it is something that can be implemented in homeschool projects as well.
SCRAP as Joy taught us, stands for:
S = Space
Space is a good thing. You don’t need to fill up every section of the page or design.
C= Contrast
Use differences to draw attention to what’s important.
R= Repetition
Repeat visual elements throughout the page.
A= Alignment
Every element on the page should have a connection with another element on the page.
P= Proximity
Items related to each other should be grouped together.
Whether you use these principles in a blog post or a science fair poster using the SCRAP principle will make your work stand out.

I loved Joy’s session, Toni. I could have just listened to her all day sharing her all that wonderful stuff with us.
Of course… I could have sat and listened to all of the speakers all day. The summit was amazing.
