Sharpened

by Kristal on November 25, 2009

I love to read the comics. I read them while I have my breakfast. Some days there aren’t any that make me giggle, but other days there are. This week though, one of my favorite comic strips, Pickles, had one that gave me pause to ponder. It appeared on Sunday (click here if you’d like to read it in completion)

The setting is a Grandfather seeing what his Grandson is doing which is writing a story. The Grandfather than relates these thoughts about his pencil:

“…each of us is like the pencil you’re holding. We go along writing the story of our life, and we have to stay sharp to write a good story. If we let ourselves get too dull, we can’t write very well. And if we make mistakes, we’ve got an eraser on the other end to correct them.”

In my mind I related this to my walk as a Christian. To stay sharp I have to be in God’s word and listening for the direction he wants me to go. I have to allow him to keep me from getting dull by sharpening me. That hurts sometimes – especially when I resist being sharpened. But when I make mistakes I’ve got the best eraser. Not one that “almost” erases my mistake – but completely washes it away – makes it white as my paper again. That would be Christ and his sacrifice on the cross.

I have an awesome responsibility. Not only do I have to keep my “pencil” sharpened but I have to teach my children how to do this. It’s not easy. They like to write with dull pencils… it’s easier than getting up and sharpening it. But life is clearer when you work with a sharpened pencil. I must train them and show them with my actions how to keep their pencil sharp.  I’m thankful I have Christ to lead me how to do this and his Word to learn from.

As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another
