I had read this book The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman before. About 10 years or more ago. It greatly impacted my life at the time and I have recommended it to people and talked about it for years, whenever discussion of it was appropriate. Over the years I loaned out my copy so much and with moving all the time ended up not getting it back at some point.
It has been on my mind again lately so I began looking for another copy to read. The library was out and the local Christian bookstore only had the “gift” version. So, I decided to wait until I could find the regular book. When I came across it last weekend at a yard sale for a quarter, I jumped for joy! Plus, it was the discussion version with the questions in the back!
My Darling Husband and I went on a trip this past week and I threw it in my bag, thinking maybe I would get to re-read it, while we were away. Well, I asked my husband if he minded if I read it aloud to him while he drove. He said sure! So, the reading commenced.
From the reading years ago I already new my own primary love language and was pretty sure which one was my husbands. As the miles passed and I read, we confirmed in each other exactly which one we each were and had some great discussions about each love language and how they applied to other people in our lives, including our teens at home! This second reading for me was so much more relevant. I think maturity and basically living life a bit more, made it even more real for me.
Also having my husband confirm which one was his, has given me a new way to love him, show him love, and make him feel loved, instead of me trying to guess at it.
This book really should be given to all married couples and especially newly weds! Our Love Languages are a profound gift from God and if spouses knew each others, it would help to greatly reduce the rapidly climbing divorce rate!
Here is a quote from my darling Husband about us reading this book together: “The Five Love Languages opened my eyes and helped me realize that everyone has a language that speaks to their personality and how they were created by God! After reading this book and understanding it, I can live my life making sure I am keeping my wife’s love tank full! Loved it!“
When we returned home from our trip we quizzed our children to see if we were right about which ones were their primary love languages as well. We were exactly right! We have spent this whole weekend loving them and each other in our Primary Love Languages and already it has made a difference in our family life!
