This week’s Winner Wednesday features Danielle Bean, winner of the 2005 Homeschooling Humor Blog Award.
What is your name?
Danielle Bean
What is your blog address?
DanielleBean.com
Tell us a little about your family.
We are a Catholic homeschooling family of 10 — mom, dad, 5 boys and 3 girls. My husband is a teacher and I am an at-home mom and part time writer/editor. We live a rather rural life here in New Hampshire in a home my husband built (and is still building).
Your children have beautiful names, how did you choose them?
Thank you! In the Catholic tradition, we chose saints’ names for our children, but we also sought to make many of them a little bit unusual. Kateri, for example, is named for the Native American Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and Eamon is a form of Edmund which is rather common in Ireland, but not so much here.
Can you share what a typical day is like for you?
Hmmmm, do I have a “typical” day? Well, I can tell you about my favorite days. My favorite days are when we go nowhere and nothing unusual happens. We spend the day together at home and focused on our work — school work, housework, and play throughout the day. There is a sense of controlled chaos and at the end of it all I feel truly connected. To my kids, to my husband, to my work, and through all of these to God. I would love to tell you that is typical for us, but usually there is something else going on to distract us: stomach viruses, pregnancy woes, baseball practices, grocery store runs, doctors’ appointments, etc. But there are enough good days, enough focused days, to sustain me. And in the end, I see that even on our less than stellar days, we are making forward progress. And that is a very good thing.
What led to your decision to start blogging?
I consider myself a victim of blogging. I started out wanting to maintain some kind of daily online presence as a means of practicing and promoting my writing. Eventually, my audience grew and before I knew it I was being swept up as part of a “blogging phenomenon” that quite frankly I knew very little about. I resisted the blog label for a long while, but I accept it now. My name is Danielle bean and I am a blogger. There. I said it.
Who was the first blog you read online?
I had a really negative first blog experience. The first one I read was a personal blog kept by a woman I vaguely knew through a previous online connection. She sent out a mass email with a link to her blog and I clicked over to see what exactly a “blog” was. It looked like narcissistic nonsense to me. I was grossly disappointed and for a long time that’s what I thought “blogging” was — over the top self-importance and navel-gazing. I suppose that’s why I resisted the label for so long. Now I know that, like any means of human communication, blogging can be done awfully badly, but it can also be done really, really well.
Can we see a photo of your desk where you blog?
I was tempted to clean it up for the photo, but then I decided that would be cheating. Notice the almost-empty glass of Diet Coke and the ever-present binky.
What is your favorite topic to blog about?
Toddlers. They are a never-ending source of material for me. If God ever stops giving me toddlers, He better hurry up and send me some grandkids or I will be forced to retire.
What do you love most about the homeschooling lifestyle?
I love being close to my kids and I love being my own boss. I love that I can wake up on a dreadful, gray day in February and declare it Brownie-Baking Day and it is so. We skip the fractions and learn to measure and mix. We skip history class and make memories of our own. We skip religion lessons and instead practice charity by delivering a plate of fresh brownies to someone who could use cheering up. Some people think of homeschooling as a huge burden, and it sure can feel that way sometimes. But it’s terrifically liberating too.

An inspiring interview–honest, humorous, humble… and HOPEFUL!
Thank you!
All’s grace,
Ann
Great interview, danielle! Is that an empty glass of wine I see there on your desk?
As a mom, I love reading her toddler stories. The religious stuff needs to be chased with a glass of milk though. Sometimes tough to swallow.
Danielle is so pretty! That concealer must work great because her skin is glowing! Thanks for honoring such a fabulous person.
Danielle,
Your desk puts me to shame. I confess that mine is 20 times messier. Time for Flylady!
Joan
What a fun interview to read! I can relate, too — I also never planned to “blog” (mine was going to be my “free website” for my online presence) and I also had a negative view, initially, of blogs based on some ugliness I’d seen out there. And, I’d love to have another toddler to blog about.
Thanks for the interview, and thanks, Danielle, for the laughter.
Well, I am a bit partial because Danielle’s was my one-and-only blog for many months. That led to discovering Karen’s (see above comment) and eventually, to starting one of my own. (It’s addictive, I tell you!)
I like to think of it as taking back the blogosphere, one happy homeschooling blog at a time!
Aah– the glass of wine wins!
Hey, what a wonderful thing to discover your blog…heading over there now!
I too had no intention of this blog thing going past my daily reflections on my life…
I am now in the group that you eluded to…
“my name is lori and i am a blogger”
lori!
Hi Dannielle,
You are a very lucky, hardworking mother,
God bless you!
Thelma
I too love your blogs. But must confess, it is hard for those of us who live in bad marriages, resulting in problems with our children etc. Some of us are not “Catholic Poster Girls” Sometimes it feels like you guys are showing off. Those of us out here who’se lives are broken and out of control, only feel worse about ourselves reading your blog. Not to offend you either. But, just to let you know, it’s kind of like an abused child from drunken parents..etc…having to watch “Father Knows Best”
Dorothyann,
I am sorry your life is broken and out of control, but would you have other people hide the fact that they have happy families in order to spare your feelings? My life is not perfect, but I am inspired toward improvement when I read great things on homeschooling blogs. “having to watch Father Knows Best?” Why do you have to? I would suggest that you not read anything that makes you feel bad about yourself.
Danielle,
Your a wonderful person and an inspiration to all mothers.
Theresa

Just your friendly moderator visit!
Hope everyone is having a great weekend!!!
I am a grandmother of ten and enjoy the things you share and the photos so much!
Thank you for your gifted insight and wonderful humaness as a mother.I find that I look forward to visiting your blog and helping me to understand more of my own uniqueness and capabilities of sharing my life with our 5 grand children (15 to 5years).God is indeed a wonderful ally.Take a pat on your back and keep loving your husband.
Great interview. I have 8 children, and no matter what I blog, I know my life is far from perfect.
I have been accused of portraying myself as a perfect blogger mom with the perfect blogger family ( Our 3 girls blog too)…
I have struggled with that image (not having it)… and keeping it real, and then I realize.. I am keeping it real. And, who wants to hear ALL of my complaining all the time anyway? I try to be positive so people like to visit. I keep it real so people want to come back.
I think you have to find a balance. This was a great interview and very inspiring. I am sorry for the Moms who feel like lesser moms because of reading blogs like yours. I hope they get the message that God is it. And, with God, we all feel lesser until we know Him and our worth in Him.
Blessings ladies!

I have to admit, I haven’t read Danielle’s blog. However, as a fellow blogger and mother… and a moderator here at the HSBA, I have to cut the negative comments short on this thread.
If you would like to discuss WITH DANIELLE the reasons why you don’t like her blog, please do so via email. I’m sure she has a contact link somewhere on her blog.
This site is a place where we lift each other up and try and share positive things with the homeschool blogosphere. I wouldn’t like someone bashing my blog on an interview post… and I think if you really consider it, you wouldn’t either.
Hopefully you can join me in trying to share encouragement rather than negativity here in our comments section at the HSBA. We want everyone to feel respected and appreciated. Even those who we may be different from.
